The Test Pilot distribution comes with an empty question database in which you enter the questions for your tests and surveys.  Depending on the platform, several files need to be distributed to prospective test creators.

Once the Test Pilot Servlet is installed, each creator can ask their webmaster for a directory on the web server in which they may place their tests.  Once that area has been created and the procedures for transferring the exported tests and surveys from the database to that area has been established, the webmaster no longer needs to be involved.  The test creators can subsequently create and host as many tests as they wish.

MacOS

MacOS Distribution

Of the distribution files for MacOS, Test Pilot and Test Pilot Database need to be distributed to each prospective test creator.

Once a user has both those files on their computer, the Test Pilot Database file may be duplicated as often as necessary to create additional question databases, for example, for multiple courses or exams.

Windows NT/95/98

Windows Distribution

Due to the considerable complexities of Windows 95/98 and NT, all eight of the files highlighted above will need to be distributed to each prospective test creator.  In addition, a user will need to instruct Windows to associate files with an extension of .TPD with the Test Pilot.EXE application.

Once a user has all of those file stored in the same directory, the tstPilot.TPD file may be duplicated as often as necessary to create additional question databases, for example, for multiple courses or exams.

Making New Question Databases

You can create an empty database from an existing database at any time by following this process:

  1. Open an existing database, preferably one that is the most current version
    available.

  2. Select Make New Database from the Script menu.  If you are using a database older than version 1.84, select Save a Copy  from the File menu.

  3. Enter a filename (Windows users should use an extension of .TPD) and
be sure to select Clone (no records) from the pop up menu in the save box.
