Test Pilot consists of two components:

The Test Pilot database resides on the author's computer (home or office) in which the author or an assistant enters the survey or test questions.  This database does not require a connection to the Internet or the purchase or installation of additional software on the instructor's computer.  Empty databases may be duplicated to create multiple question banks for different courses or surveys.

The second component is the Test Pilot Java Servlet.  That is, a software component that extends the functionality of your school or company's web server in order to generically handle the test and surveys exported from any Test Pilot database.  This component was written in Sun's Java language using their web server extension programming interface (API) in order to assure it's compatibility across all major web servers.  Such extensions are called Java Servlets.

Requirements for the server include an installation of a web server package, a Java runtime environment (VM), and the bridge software necessary to run Java servlets under control of the web server.

An explanation of the basic steps to install the Test Pilot on commonly used web servers is detailed below.

For other servers, the installation and configuration of Java VM's, the Java Servlet bridge component, and the web server could be a detailed process covered in the documentation included with the bridge software and is best supported by those companies shipping that software.  The Test Pilot Java Servlet is located in the Servlets folder of the distribution.

If you already have a server using Java servlets, installation is as simple as dragging the TestPilot.zip file to your server's servlets directory.  Some implementations may require you to unzip the zip file for proper execution.  Consult your server's documentation.

MacOS Installation

Download and install Apple's Java environment, MRJ, on your Web server.  This is a one button, double-click, installation.

New Atlanta Product's, ServletExec, plug-in for WebSTAR API compatible servers is included with the distribution.  Install it on your web server.  This is another one button, double click installation.  The distributed version is time limited and will expire.  You will eventually need to purchase a serial number.  You may need to increase your server's memory allocation to handle the additional requirements of the ServletExec plug-in.

Drag the TestPilot.zip file from the distribution Servlets folder to the Servlets folder on your Web server.  This folder was automatically created in the previous step.

You're done.  To test it, enter a URL like the following:

    http://yourserver.com/servlet/TestPilot/

You should receive a Test Pilot login screen if everything is installed correctly.

Windows NT Installation

New Atlanta Product's, ServletExec, plug-in for ISAPI and NSAPI  NT web servers is included with the distribution.  Install it on your web server.   The distributed version is time limited and will expire.  You will eventually need to purchase a serial number.  Carefully read the installation instructions as there are a number of configuration issues that may need to be dealt with.

Sun Java Web Server 1.03 for UNIX Installation

Sun's Java Web Server for UNIX supports servlets by default.  No bridge software is necessary.

Drag the TestPilot.zip file from the distribution Servlets folder to the Servlets directory on your Web server.  Use a tool to unzip the file into its constituent class files.  The zip file can then be safely disposed of.

You're done.  To test it, enter a URL like the following:

    http://yourserver.com/servlet/TestPilot/

You should receive a Test Pilot login screen if everything is installed correctly.
