Defining Question Text Attributes and Backgrounds

The Color & Style tab presents the controls on the display of questions and text on the web pages generated by Test Pilot's web server extensions.

  • one question per page - checking this option overrides Test Pilot's default presentation of all selected questions on a single web page. This presents questions, one-at-a-time to the user. The user answers the question and then proceeds to the next question in the assessment. Not until all of the assessment's questions are answered does Test Pilot's web server extension record the user's responses.

  • You may optionally choose to have your custom question feedback be presented to the user in between questions by checking the feedback after every question checkbox.

  • You may also elect to create an adaptive assessment where the next question shown is selected based on the participant's response to the current question. Click on enable branching and then while designing the questions, specify the progression using options presented under the response handling section of each question's design screen.

  • You may optionally remove the previous question button to have more control over question presentation. This option is automatically enabled if your enable branching.

  • You may elect to have questions numbered. However, remember that this is a logical numbering and when questions are presented in a random order, the number associated with a particular question will vary.

  • There is a bug (feautre?) in Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser that causes assessments to be submitted whenever the keypad enter key is pressed. Some users develop a habit of using the keypad enter key to end a text entry with the potential result of submitting an incomplete assessment. Enabling the submission warning causes a Javascript function to be inserted into the assessment Test Pilot generates. This function will ask the user if their intention is to submit their responses. This will allow the participant to return to their work without submission if they wish.

  • Test Pilot includes an erase button which erases all user responses on an assessment. If the participant clicks this erase button by mistake, their responses would disappear. With this option, you can prevent the erase button from appearing on your assessments.

  • test background color - this sets the color of the web page presented by Test Pilot's web server extension.

  • test background graphic - test override the text background color option to set a graphic file as the background of the web pages generated by Test Pilot. This must be a URL or a simple filename of a jpg or nonanimated gif image file. In the case of a simple filename, the file should be placed on the web server in the same directory as the file exported from the database.

  • question text color - this sets the color of the text used on the web page. It is not a good idea to set this color to be the same value as the test background color.

  • question font - this sets the typeface used in the text displayed on the web pages. The fonts must be available on the computers being used by those participating in the assessment. If not, their web browsers will use a default font. Some older web browsers do not support the setting of text fonts, in which case this option will be ignored.

  • question font size - this sets the size of the text on the web pages generated by Test Pilot. Web page font sizes range from 1 to 6 with 3 being considered a standard size.

  • question font style - this set the style of the question's text as presented on web pages. Supported styles are: plain, bold, italic and bold italic.
