Securing Access to Assessments by Computer Internet Address

The Computer List security controls permit you to restrict exactly which computers are permitted to access your assessments. Test Pilot acomplishes this by restricting access based on the unique Internet address assigned to a computer. You may need the assistance of your technical support staff to get a list of the Internet addresses (IP addresses) of the computers to which you want your assessments restricted.

You must first check the enable these restrictions checkbox if you wish to limit access to particular computers.

Like user lists, IP lists can be shared between assessments by listing the addresses in an ASCII text file, checking read from filename and entering the filename in the space provided. The file must be placed on the web server in the same directory as the assessment as exported from the database.

When Test Pilot is configured properly, it protects from access filenames ending with the extension .tpj We recommend that you end your IP list filenames in X.tpj in order to take advantage of that built-in protection. (e.g. iplistX.tpj, the X is to avoid conflicts with Test Pilot result filenames which also end in .tpj)

The file format is the same as the format of the list in the database. That is, addresses are entered one per line in the file or in the box on the screen shown above.

We offer a handy shortcut if you wish to permit all computers on an Internet subnet to access you assessment. That is for example, all computers whose IP address begins with 128.210.90. This actually refers to 254 computers and you simply need to enter the subnet address ot the IP address without the rightmost period and number. Two subnet examples are shown above.
