Securing Access to Assessments by Time

The Time Limits security controls allow you to specify a time and date range when your assessment is available to user participation. It also allows you to specify a time limit so that users must complete the assessment in a given time period.

A word of warning: Test Pilot, like any computer program is very good at keeping time. Once a time limit has expired, users will be unable to submit any of their responses and all of their work will be lost. Therefore, you should exercise great care when setting time limits on an assessment.

To enforce any time limits you must check the enable these restrictions checkbox. If, for any reason you do not wish to impose a particular limit, leave the entry empty (for dates and times) or zero (for numbers).

  • start date - assessments will not be made available until this date. Please use 4-digit years to avoid any potential Y2K issues.

  • start time - assessments will not be made available until this time on the start date. Using a 24 hour time format will avoid any potentials for confusion.

  • end date - assessments will not be made available after this date. Please use 4-digit years to avoid any potential Y2K issues.

  • end time - assessments will not be made available after this time on the end date. Using a 24 hour time format will avoid any potentials for confusion.

  • elapsed time limit - when a participant requests an assessment a timer effectively begins ticking. If the user has not submitted their responses before the elapsed time limit has expired, Test Pilot will ignore and discard their responses. Use this limit very carefully.

You may elect to optionally include a countdown timer on the web page by clicking on the include countdown timer checkbox. Also, upon expiration of the timer, you can specify that the user's web browser should automatically submit their responses as they stand. Both of these options require that the user's web browser be able to run Javascript programs. These are small programs that embedded in a web page. Most modern web browsers including Netscape 3 and above and Internet Explorer 4 and above, support Javascript. However, beware that some users may not have those web browsers or that they may have turned off the Javascript features on their computers. In that case, these options will simply not function, and the user will need to watch the clock and click on the submit button in order to record their responses.
