Time Limits
Up - Security Next - Attempt Limits

The controls for securing access to your assessment is broken down into five areas which will appear in the lower right panel when you use the link shown, as above, in the top right panel. These include:

  • Global Info - this allows you to edit the assessment owner's e-mail address, and if you are the assessment owner, define assessment managers with varying priviliges to assist you in the management of your assessment.

  • Time Limits - this allows you to specify limits as to when your assessment may be accessed. You may also specify a limit on the amount of time that participants are given to complete an assessment.

  • Attempt Limits - this allows you to limit the number of times that an assessment may be viewed or the number of times participants are permitted to submit responses to your assessment.

  • Authorized Participants - this allows you to specify a list of participant id's and names. Only participants on this list are permitted to access the assessment.

  • Authorized Workstations - this allows you to specify a list of internet addresses representing workstations permitted to access the assessment.

These features combined allow you to specify who may access an assessment, from where and at what time. For example, you could restrict access to a particular computer laboratory at a particular time. With a proctor checking id's at the door, you enjoy the same level of security as a paper-based test.

Test Pilot's security features represent the most comprehensive set of security features for online assessment in the industry.

Time Limits

Start Time - this allows you to specify a time that the assessment will become available. Any attempt to access the assessment before that time by a participant other than the owner or a manager will fail.

End Time - this allows you to specify a time that the assessment will cease being available. Any attempt to access the assessment after that time by a participant other than the owner or a manager will fail.

Recall Time - this allows you to specify a time that after which participant will be able to recall theire responses to the assessment. After this time has been reached, a Recall button will appear on the login screen to permit participants to access their evaluated assessment. This is useful when several sections of students are accessing an assessment over a period of time and you do not wish the correct answers released until all have participated in the assessment. It also allows for time to complete manual online scoring of essay questions before any results are released.

Elapsed Time Limit - this allows you to specify the length of time a participant is given to complete an assessment. When the time expires, Test Pilot will refuse to accept or record a participant's responses.

With the exception of include a time remaining message, each suboption requires that participants have a Javascript-capable broswer such as Netscape 3+ or Internet Explorer 4+ and that they have not disabled Javascript.

  • include a countdown timer - this causes a small countdown timer to be shown at the top of the web pages generated for the assessment.

  • include a time remaining message - this causes a message to be shown at the top of the web pages generated for the assessment which indicates at which time the assessment is expected to be completed.

  • warn participants before expiration - this causes an alert message to appear at the specified interval before timer expiration. This option requires that you include a countdown timer.

  • submit user responses automatically upon expiration - this option causes the participant's responses to be submitted for evaluation, regardless of their state of completion, upon expiration of the countdown timer. This option also requires that you include a countdown timer.

Help is Available!

Please note that, at any time while you are editing an assessment, you can click upon the titles of the fields listed for your entries. If you do so, a pop-up window with an explanation of the items use and features will be shown.

Saving your Changes - Don't Forget to Update

It should be noted that on the editing panels, you will see one or more Update buttons. Whenever you adjust a setting or make changes to any item, you must click an update button to record the changes. You may make multiple changes and then click Update, but if you fail to click the update button, your changes may not be recorded.

The mode popup menu allows you to adjust access to Test Pilot features and trim the detail of the automatically provided assistance for authoring.

  • for beginners - several of Test Pilot's more complicated options are hidden or preset to default values and pop-up assistance windows automatically appear to aid the user in the assessment authoring process.

  • with assistance - most of Test Pilot's features are shown as controls which may be adjusted. Pop-up help windows must be manually requested for viewing by clicking upon any feature title.

  • for experts - all of Test Pilot's features are shown as controls which may be adjusted. Help messages are minimized to maximize the number of controls that can be shown in a limited area. Pop-up help windows may still be manually requested for viewing by clicking upon any feature title.
